Good communication between separated parents does not always mean agreeing on everything. It often means being able to exchange essential information clearly, respectfully and consistently.

Keep conversations focused

A message about a school trip should explain the date, cost, permission requirements and deadline. Include what the other parent actually needs to know.

Separate arrangements from disagreements

Where appropriate and safe, keep discussions about collections, appointments or activities focused on the specific arrangements.

Allow reasonable time for responses

Not every message needs an immediate reply. Consider work, childcare and other commitments, and agree how urgent information should be shared.

Keep information accessible

School letters and appointment details can become buried in conversations. Organised documents and calendars make information easier to find.

When shared communication is not appropriate

Where abuse, intimidation or safeguarding concerns exist, ordinary shared communication may be unsafe. Respect protective arrangements and seek professional advice where needed.
